The Challenge:
The DWP required several of their benefit information leaflets to be produced in audio format (CD and cassette recordings) to be used with ethnic minority groups who were unable to read because of visual impairment or learning difficulties. The languages required were Vietnamese, Somali, Bengali and French. This project was complex to organise as it had many different stages that had to be gone through before the recordings were complete and delivered to the client.

Our Approach:
The source texts for this project consisted of printed leaflets for various benefits and allowances that were in English. The process to turn these into audio recordings involved several stages. First, we made written translations of the leaflets into the four languages concerned. Next, we organised native speakers of the languages to act as voice artists. We gave them the translations and asked them to check them over as proofreaders and also to adapt them for audio use. For example, if the leaflet referred to a page number, this would be changed in the script to “later/previously in this recording” as appropriate. Then, we arranged with our sound engineer to make the master recordings. At the same time, we organised the design and printing of CD labels and cassette inlay cards. Finally, copies of the recordings were made to CD and cassette in the quantities required by the client and the boxes of recordings were dispatched.

The Result:
The client was completely satisfied with the recordings produced and remarked about how professional the project management of the project had been.
