French Language
French is one of the major languages of the world, rivalled only by English as the language of international business and diplomacy.
Besides being spoken in France itself, French is also spoken by significant sections of the population in Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and in a large number of former French colonies all over the world including the Caribbean and South America (French Guyana), North and Central Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Congo, etc), and some Pacific islands. French is believed to be spoken by around 80-90 million people as a native language and by as many as 190-200 million more as a second language.
There are significant regional differences between the French spoken in different countries.
The English language has been widely influenced by French since the Norman conquest of England in the 11th century, meaning there are two many English words derived from French to list. However, some modern French words and expressions are also commonly used in English including: hors d’oeuvre, à la carte, en route, rendezvous, carte blanche, fait accompli, par excellence, coup d’état, laissez faire and pièce de résistance.
