German Language

Besides being spoken in Germany itself, German is also spoken by the majority of the populations of Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Lichtenstein. There are also significant German-speaking communities in other countries on Germany’s borders such as Italy, France, Belgium, Denmark and the Czech Republic. In addition there are significant numbers of German speakers in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela and Chile. German is also widely spoken among the white population of the former German colony of Namibia.

There are currently estimated to be around 120 million native speakers and 80 million non-native speakers of German in the world.

There are significant regional differences between the German spoken in different regions of Germany and in other countries.

The English language is closely related linguistically to German – both having their roots in the same Saxon tongue – but it has also borrowed a number of modern German words into English vocabulary. Some examples of fairly common words would be angst, kindergarten, sauerkraut, apple strudel and cobalt. There are also many more technical words used in English in subject areas such as psychology, politics and science, such as: doppelganger, schadenfreude, Zeitgeist, Poltergeist.
