Client: Health and Safety Executive

Work Type: Interpreting and Translation

Project Type: Medical & Legal

The Challenge:
With the increasing numbers of workers from Eastern Europe in the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have experienced a significant increase in cases where injured workers do not speak English well enough to understand their legal position. They have a legal obligation to ensure that language does not act as a barrier to these individuals understanding their rights and responsibilities in such cases.

Our Approach:
We have sent a number of linguists to work at HSE workplace interviews in the aftermath of accidents at work. The linguist has to carry out two distinct functions. During the interview they have to help the HSE inspector take down an accurate statement of what happened, according to the overseas workers involved. Thereafter, they translate the statement to provide the workers with a written copy of the HSE inspector’s findings in their own language.

The Result:
A large number of projects of this type have been completed for the client, to the satisfaction of both the HSE and the individuals concerned.
