Italian is one of the major European languages. As well as being the national language of Italy, Italian is also spoken in France and Switzerland and in the tiny states of San Marino and the Vatican City. There are also Italian-speaking communities in Malta, Croatia, Slovenia, France, Libya, Eritrea and Somalia. In addition, there are large Italian emigrant communities all over the world, especially in the United States, South America and Australia. There has been an Italian community in Scotland for many years also.
There are currently estimated to be around 65 million Italian speakers in Italy and possibly another 20 million speakers in other countries.
Global Connects has a number of Italian translators in our network and we carry out a significant number of Italian translation projects each year (this includes English into Italian translations and Italian into English translations).
We have carried out a wide range of different kinds of Italian translations including:
The Italian language has a long history, its origins going back to the Latin of Roman times, and its development being traced in the Middle Ages and Renaissance in the writings of key figures such as Dante Alighieri. However, modern Italian was standardised and came to be the national language following Italian Unificiation in the mid-19th century.
English has borrowed a number of words from Italian that are now common in English. Many musical terms and culinary terms in particular are of Italian origin. Examples of general Italian words include: baloney, bronze, cameo, caricature, carpet, colonnade, confetti, dilettante, fiasco, graffiti, grotto, imbroglio, Madonna, maestro, mascara, mezzanine, piazza, replica, villa and virtuoso. Culinary terms include: al dente, al fresco, barista, broccoli, cappuccino, ciabatta, linguine, macaroni, pasta, pesto, ravioli, spaghetti, etc. Musical terms include: adagio, allegro, cadenza, forte, opera, orchestra, piano, presto, solo, soprano, tempo, etc.
