Chinese is spoken by more people in the world than any other language. Almost a fifth of the world’s six billion population speak one or more of the Chinese dialects. Although there are many different forms of spoken Chinese, not all of which are mutually understandable to speakers of other Chinese dialects, there are only two written forms of the language known as Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
The most common form of Chinese is Mandarin, which is spoken by around 900 million people, having originated in the Beijing area. It is written using the Simplified Chinese characters.
The other common form of Chinese required in the UK is Cantonese, which is spoken by about 50 million people in Southern China including Hong Kong. It is written using Traditional Chinese characters.
The form of Chinese used in Taiwan also uses Traditional Chinese characters.
