Middle Eastern Languages

The Middle East is a geographical subcontinent lying between Europe in the north west, Russia in the north, Asia in the east and Africa in the south west. The following countries are included within our definition of the Middle East:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bahrain
  • Egypt
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Israel
  • Jordan
  • Kuwait
  • Lebanon
  • Oman
  • Palestine
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Syria
  • Turkey
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Yemen

The region has a predominantly Islamic culture (although Israel is an exception) and Arabic is the most widely spoken language in the region.

These are the main languages of the Middle East:

  • Arabic (Throughout most of the region)
  • Dari (Afghanistan)
  • Farsi (Iran)
  • Hebrew (Israel)
  • Kurdish (Iran, Iraq, Syria & Turkey)
  • Pushto (Afghanistan)
  • Turkish (Turkey)
