Multilingual Typesetting

We have many years’ experience in typesetting a huge range of documents and have built up a suite of programmes and a pool of fonts that allows us to typeset virtually any language to a professional standard with the look and feel of a published text. Continuing investment in software and fonts ensure we stay at the cutting edge of multilingual typesetting.

Typesetting is carried out when a translation is going to be presented in printed formats such as posters, flyers, leaflets or booklets. It is very important to use a specialist typesetter when dealing with multilingual documents as it is a technical task requiring experience, specialist software and foreign language fonts.

Charges for typesetting are calculated on the amount of time spent on a project which will vary depending on these factors:

  • Language – some languages are more difficult to typeset than others, especially if non-Roman script is used by a language. Where a language reads in the opposite direction to English (e.g. Arabic), this will require an entirely new design template to be created for example. umber of pages – the more pages involved, the longer a project will take to complete.
  • Complexity of layout – as important as the number of pages is the way the pages are laid out. An intricate design with many text boxes, panels, captions and diagrams will take longer to typeset than a document that largely has free-flowing text in plain columns.
  • Urgency of deadline – charges would be higher if the typesetters need to work overtime in evenings or weekends to meet a deadline.
  • Availability of a usable artwork template – if you can provide us with an artwork template for the text to be placed into, this will reduce costs as otherwise we have to recreate the document template first. Please note that a PDF file of the document is not an artwork template and MS Publisher files are not really regarded as professional design files. We would be looking for Quark files, InDesign files or similar.
