SCDI has used Global Connects translation services for a number of years, particularly for Japanese and Chinese brochures. On every occasion we have found the service to be quick, efficient and, most importantly, the end product has been accurately translated. We are more than happy to use Global Connections for any future translation work.

Punjabi Language

Punjabi (also sometimes spelled Panjabi) is the language spoken in the historic Punjab region which, since 1947, has been partly in India and partly in Pakistan. There are estimated to be around 100 million speakers of Punjabi, including 75 million in Pakistan and 25 million in India. There are also Punjabi speaking communities overseas.

There are two major Punjabi dialects: Western Punjabi, also called Lahnda, which is spoken in the northern part of Pakistan and Eastern Punjabi, spoken in the rest of Pakistan and in India.

There are also two written forms of the language. Punjabi can either be written in Gurmukhi script, which is used in India, while Punjabi in Pakistan is often written using a Persian-Arabic script called Shahmukhi script (though most official documents in Pakistan are written in Urdu).

The Gurmukhi script is associated with the Sikh religion since the alphabet was used by the Sikh Gurus for their writings (Gurmukhi means “from the mouth of the guru”).

Punjabi is one of the main ethnic minority languages in the UK today.

Punjabi Translation

We sometimes receive documents written in Punjabi that require to be translated into English. These are usually official or legal documents issued in India or Pakistan.

However, most of our Punjabi translation work concerns translations from English into Punjabi. These translations are often required by public and voluntary sector organisations who wish to or need to communicate with the communities of Punjabi speakers living in the UK. The translations include:

  • Letters
  • Posters
  • Information leaflets
  • Official Notices
  • Invitations to civic events
  • Questionnaires
  • Answers to questionnaires
  • Websites
