Christina Seed,
The Tribunal Service

Client: Scottish Qualifications Authority

Work Type: Translation

Project Type: Educational

The Challenge:
This was a large translation project for Scotland’s national school examinations body. The client required course syllabus material for a large number of secondary school subjects to be translated into Scottish Gaelic. The challenge was that the subject matter of the different materials required translators with a number of different specialisms including geography, history, politics and mathematics.

Our Approach:
In setting up the project, we had to make a careful selection of different translators who had the correct specialisms and backgrounds to undertake the different school subjects that required translation. For example, we used some who had already translated school maths and science textbooks into Gaelic to do the maths, physics, chemistry and biology materials. We used someone with experience of news and political translations to do the Modern Studies materials, a historian to do the history materials, etc. We then had a leading Gaelic academic review and proofread all the translations to make sure they were accurate, consistent and suitable for their intended use.

The Result:
All materials were delivered on time to the client and were well-received by them. They are now in use for Gaelic-speaking teachers and pupils.
