Urdu Language

Urdu is the official language of Pakistan, the native tongue of 10 million and the second language of around 100 million more Pakistanis. It is also spoken by some 50 million Moslems in India.

Linguistically, Urdu is actually a variety of Hindi that originated in the city of Dehli. After the Moslem conquest of the northern part of India in the 16th century, a large number of Persian, Arabic and Turkish words entered the language and it came to be written using Arabic characters with extra letters for sounds occurring only in Indian and Persian words.

Prior to the partition of India in 1947, Hindi and Urdu were considered dialects of the one language, which used to be referred to as Hindustani.

Urdu is one of the main ethnic minority languages in the UK today.
