There are specific issues associated with creating a web page in a different language, particularly for languages like Chinese, Arabic or Urdu that use scripts and fonts that are very different from the English alphabet. Creating a multilingual website requires special knowledge and skills to ensure the foreign language texts display correctly on the computers of anyone visiting the website. This needs to be done with a combination of live text and images.

Website Localisation

Some organisations go beyond merely translating their website and have it localised. This is where the text is not only translated into the language of the target readership, but it is also adapted for the culture of the intended readership. This may involve changing the colour scheme, the system of weights and measures, the currencies, the cultural references, the photographs and diagrams to suit the readers in the locale where the website is intended to be read.

Localisation essentially makes the website look like it has been produced by an organisation or business in the country where the website is intended to be read. It is a more detailed and expensive process than translation alone, but should make visitors to the website feel more comfortable and potentially increase site traffic.
